MARYSVILLE — Jessica Jeffrey and Gabriel Gribler have been named the Marysville Soroptimist and Kiwanis Students of the Month for March.
Jeffrey won the Most Inspirational Student Award in ninth grade, received a Certificate of Academic Excellence in 10th grade, won the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence from ninth through 11th grade, and has made the honor roll all four years of high school. She took advanced math and Spanish in 10th grade, and AP U.S. History, AP language and composition, college algebra and Spanish two in 11th grade. In 12th grade, she’s taken AP statistics, AP literature, Spanish three and physics, and has served as an Academic Challenge participant, an instructional intern at Kellogg Marsh Elementary and a member of the Mock Trial team. She’s been a member of National Honor Society since 11th grade, and has been accepted to Western Washington University.
Jeffrey was involved in the Totem Pole Project in ninth grade, Drama Club in ninth and 10th grade, school soccer in ninth through 11th grade, and the School for the Entrepreneur DECA Club in 11th and 12th grade, first as secretary, then as president. In 12th grade, she has participated in the DECA fall leadership conference, competed at the Area One regional competition in travel and tourism, where she scored eighth place, and gone on to the state competitions for travel and tourism and marketing math. She’s also been a member of Raising Students Voice and Participation, and Ultimate Frisbee Club, in 12th grade.
Jeffrey volunteered at the Pooh and Friends Preschool in ninth grade, as a coach in the Marysville Youth Soccer League in 10th grade, and as a tutor at Quil Ceda Elementary in 11th grade, the same grade during which she tutored two seniors in math and volunteered at the YMCA Trick or Treat Fun Run. She has coordinated food drives since 11th grade, raising more than 5,000 items, and in 12th grade, she has coordinated and participated in Ronald McDonald House’s Teen Movie Night, in addition to serving as a Big Buddy for an autistic girl at Kellogg Marsh Elementary. She’s volunteered all four years of high school at Immaculate Conception Church and Imagine Children’s Museum.
In 11th grade, Jeffrey served as a camp counselor for the Everett Parks and Recreation Code 10 Day Camp, and established the School for the Entrepreneur DECA Club. She’s been captain of her Premier Soccer Team since 11th grade, and in 12th grade, she became a coach at Pursuit of Perfection Gymnastics Academy.
Gribler has a GPA of 3.76 and ranks 60th in his class. His SAT scores are 520 in writing, 570 in reading and 620 in math, for a composite score of 1,710. His ACT scores are 23 in English and writing, 31 in math, 27 in reading and 30 in science, for a composite score of 28. He’s pursued honors and AP courses since ninth grade and has received As in all of his classes at the high school. Among the college-level math courses he’s taken have been trigonometry, algebra, calculus and statistics, and among the science courses he’s taken have been physical science, biology, and AP biology, chemistry and physics. He’s been on the honor roll since sixth grade, was named Foreign Language Student of the Year in ninth grade, took college courses through the Everett Community College Running Start program in 11th grade, and was accepted into the University of Washington in February.
Gribler has rowed competitively year-round for the Everett Rowing Association since the summer of 2005, and last spring, he placed first in the nation in the men’s lightweight 8+ at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships. He served as captain of the men’s varsity team for the 2007-2008 rowing season, and will be rowing for UW. He also swam first year in 10th grade, moving up from the beginners’ lane to second lane in a month, and lettering in his first season.
Among the DECA events Gribler has contributed to, as a club member in 12th grade, have been the Life Skills Christmas Party, the Martin Luther King Jr. assembly, the student store, various fundraisers and the “Think About It” program. He took on a large planning and leadership role in the MLK assembly’s visual elements, and was named a Senior Marketing Student of the Month. He has also been a member of the National Honor Society since 11th grade.
Gribler has volunteered on behalf of the Teddy Bear Breakfast, park cleanups for Marysville and Everett parks and recreation departments, charity events such as Row for the Cure, Rotary auctions, Everett Rowing Association annual auctions and various summer kids’ programs.
