MARYSVILLE – If kids won’t go to the library, the library will go to the kids.
That’s the plan anyway as starting July 6 Kellogg Marsh Elementary School will start its “Reading on the Road” program.
The school collected hundreds of books the last few weeks in session to prepare the library.
“The room is filled,” Principal Eneille Nelson said.
Every Wednesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. until Aug. 3 Kellogg staff will be going to the Cedar Landing and Cedar Grove apartments, where about 100 of its students live. Students at the school who live elsewhere also are invited.
During that hour, students will read with staff, who will then give out the donated new and gently used books to students.
Snacks also will be provided. The school is partnering with the YMCA, which will add fun activities to the event.
Nelson said the school library has been open in previous summers, but few students came. So, in talking with the school’s kindergarten teachers, they decided to load up some district vans and take the books to the kids instead.
“Kids leave school at such a great place” in learning, Nelson said. “But kids often don’t read in summer months.”
Nelson said the district is watching how well this works, so it could possibly grow to other schools next year.
