LAKEWOOD – Against the backdrop of a sleek new campus under construction and on a field still scented with new turf smell, graduates of the Lakewood High School class of 2017 took the stage to receive their diplomas.
The 169 seniors have the distinction of being the 34th graduating class of Lakewood, and the last class of Cougars to call the former high school home before the bell sounds at the new facility when school resumes in September.
On June 16, the commencement ceremony offered parents and families in the grandstands, teachers, administrators, school board, staff and other well-wishers to honor the graduates for their hard work in the classroom, and successful times ahead.
The ceremony opened with the faculty and graduate processionals, presentation of colors by the Arlington Navy Junior ROTC, and the national anthem sung by student Robbie St. Jean.
Principal Mike Curl welcomed the seniors and those in attendance. Valedictorian Jenna Melton, a softball and volleyball team standout in addition to National Honor Society member, provided a rousing address to inspire fellow students, followed by student Henry Hurd, who was voted by the class to speak. They were joined teacher Jeremiah Wohlgemuth, who was also chosen by the class to address students on behalf of the faculty. Abigail Graf, a member of the National Honor Society, Knowledge Bowl Team and involved in cross country, track and band, was salutatorian.
Superintendent Michael Mack and teacher Larry Delaney, along with the school board receiving line and others, presented diplomas to the graduates and congratulated them on their achievements.
Music was provided by the LHS Jazz Band under the direction of Michael Sweeney, and Swingbeat with arrangement by Deke Sharon.
