Local residents rally in Marysville to protest cuts to government programs

MARYSVILLE — Local residents will gather at the corner of Fourth Street and State Avenue on Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. to object to the recent debt ceiling negotiations, which they believe have failed to protect the middle class. The rally is being organized by the "American Dream Movement," which was inspired by protests in Wisconsin and further fueled by what its members see as attacks on the middle class and the poor. More than 800 such rallies were organized nationwide last month to speak out against the results of the debt ceiling debate.

MoveOn.org is one of the American Dream Movement’s supporters, and Joy Currie, a local MoveOn member, is calling on elected officials to focus on job creation, rather than on making cuts to programs that many Americans depend on.

“The Republicans in Washington are holding our economy hostage in pursuit of their extreme ideological agenda,” Currie said. “We need our Democrats in Congress to continue to stand up for the folks in our community and demand more jobs, not more cuts. The recently passed debt deal, which will do nothing to create jobs, forces deep cuts to important programs that protect the middle class, while asks nothing of big corporations and millionaires. Though it does not require cuts to Medicare, Social Security or Medicaid benefits, it opens the door for these down the road via an unaccountable Congressional committee.”
