MARYSVILLE – Two suspects in the murder in Marysville of Tye Burley of Arlington were captured Wednesday after a foot chase in Escondido, CA.
Jorge “Speedy” Martinez Jr. and Jose “Chi Chi” Nava are in police custody after an Escondido police officer spotted a vehicle with Washington license plates acting suspiciously. The car immediately pulled into a parking lot, and three people fled on foot, Marysville police say.
Martinez and Nava were captured following a brief chase. The two are wanted in connection with the killing of the 30-year-old Burley, who was shot Feb. 20 in a robbery of his $7,000 in casino winnings. He died Feb. 22.
Two suspects were arrested but Martinez and Nava, two known gang members, were on the loose and considered armed and dangerous, police say.
Marysville detectives are headed to California, where Nava and Martinez remain in jail, pending extradition.
Marysville detective Sgt. James Maples said, “Having the remaining two suspects in police custody is great news.”
During the robbery and shooting in Marysville, Martinez, 31, and Nava, 30, were seen on video exiting a white Dodge Durango, approaching Burley, assaulting and robbing him, then returning to the SUV and fleeing.
Information has been developed that all four men were in the vehicle immediately before and after the robbery.
“Evidence indicates that one of these two new suspects fired the handgun that ultimately took the victim’s life,” Maples said.
Martinez and Nava are gang members with ties to the Everett, Mount Vernon and Bellingham.
The other two suspects – Jeremy Daily and Jared Evans – have already been booked into the Snohomish County Jail in Everett on first-degree murder charges.
On Feb. 20 at about 7 p.m. the victim was walking from his vehicle, parked near the Village Inn and Suites, 235 Beach Ave. That’s when he and a female friend were approached by two men who had their faces covered. The suspects scuffled with the victim while the woman ran off. During the fight, a shot was fired, and the victim suffered a traumatic brain injury.
Investigators learned that the victim had won a significant amount of cash at the nearby Quil Ceda Creek Casino over the previous couple of days. The victim’s wallet was missing.
Investigators reviewed video, and talked with Daily, who was staying with the victim at the motel. He knew the victim had won the money.
Daily was arrested on an outstanding warrant, then admitted to helping plan the assault and robbery. He identified a second suspect, Evans, who was contacted at his Marysville home and also admitted to his role in the robbery.
Dailey has a history of armed robbery. Court papers show he held up a Shell gas station clerk at gunpoint in Marysville in June 2012. Two days later, he used a gun to rob a cashier at a Marysville smoke shop. His face was covered by a black bandana in both. Dailey pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 years and 5 months in prison. A warrant for his arrest was issued two weeks ago because he hadn’t been paying court fines related to those convictions.
A deputy prosecutor, Michelle Rutherford, said it appeared Dailey had been the brains behind the most-recent robbery.
“He’s likely the mastermind behind the plot to get people involved in this robbery, that is going to result in the death of this victim,” Rutherford said in court Feb. 21.
Judge Tam Bui set bail at $500,000 for both of those men.
