MARYSVILLE — At approximately 7:50 a.m., a residential fire was spotted in the 1400 block of Cedar Avenue by the Marysville Fire District battalion chief.

A crew of 20 firefighters and paramedics, a ladder truck, two medic and aid units, three engines and a number of chief officers arrived within minutes to find a garage fully engulfed in flames, which were extending to the attached house and vehicles, and producing a column of black smoke that could be seen from miles away.

Because the structure was so far back from the road, fire crews had to run a hose all the way from the nearest hydrant on the street, down the “blind alley” to the fire.

According to Marysville Fire District Public Information Officer Kristen Thorstenson, the fire was quickly contained, but firefighters remained on the scene to conduct cleanup and put out any further hotspots, the latter to ensure that fire damage would not extend any further.

Thorstenson described the fire damage as “pretty extensive,” although there are no injuries to report. The resident was able to escape the home and will be staying with friends, while the dollar loss is estimated at $190,000. The fire was ruled suspicious in the wake of an investigation by the Marysville Police Department, the Marysville Fire District and the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office. The investigation has been turned over to the Marysville Police Department.
