MARYSVILLE — The cause of death of a 17-year-old Marysville student who was found unconscious by her friends on June 18 has yet to be determined, according to Marysville police.

Marysville Police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux acknowledged that detectives are investigating the case as a possible overdose, due to the absence of outward signs of trauma, but noted that toxicology reports on the case have yet to be released. He added that a medical condition hasn’t been ruled out as the cause of the girl’s death.

Because the girl was a junior in the Bio-Med Academy at Marysville Getchell High School, Marysville School District officials notified other students’ parents of the girl’s death by letter on June 20, and are making school counselors and the district’s crisis team available to any students or staff members in need of support.

“The impact of this tragedy will be felt differently by each child,” the letter read, which was signed by the principals of all four of Marysville Getchell’s Small Learning Communities. “As a parent, you will best know how to support your child as he [or] she works through the shock, grief and fears in facing this death. […] We all feel a tremendous loss — it is never easy to lose any child and will hold family and friends close in our hearts at this sad time.”

According to Lamoureux, police received a 9-1-1 call at approximately 2 p.m. on June 18 from the parents of the young people who had hosted a party of their peers at their house on the evening of June 17. The girl was one of their guests, and after the young people who live at the house were unable to wake her up on June 18, they summoned their parents. The girl was pronounced dead on the scene.

Although Marysville police have been interviewing people who were with the girl on the evening of June 17, Lamoureux emphasized that there are no suspects in her death. He also warned that not all of the rumors surrounding the girl’s death, that have been circulated by young people online, are accurate.

Marysville School District officials currently have no information on any funeral or memorial services, but plan to make it available upon request or as they receive it.
