MARYSVILLE — American troops serving overseas will be treated to 100 care packages that were put together June 17 by work parties assembled by Marysville Unit 178 of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Kay Smith wants the Marysville community to know that their American Legion post not only has its own Ladies Auxiliary, but that this Auxiliary is also hard at work on providing for active-duty service members. To that end, its members are already collecting items for their next shipment of care packages in December.
Each care package contained a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lotion, hand sanitizer, gum, hard candies, a deck of cards, a notepad, a pen and a pocket flag. Smith, the president of the Auxiliary, is soliciting donations of similar items to include in the next set of care packages. This includes not only hand sanitizer, pocket-size paper tablets, pens, Trident gum and non-chocolate candy, but also lip balm, crossword puzzle books, foot powder and sunblock.
“It is our intent to let 200 military personnel each year know that they haven’t been forgotten,” said Smith, who added that checks can be made payable to Marysville Unit 178 of the American Legion Auxiliary. “We’ll also be participating in the ‘Wounded Warrior’ program, for personnel returning stateside who have been wounded while on deployment.”
Smith explained that the Auxiliary needs donations to cover shipping costs, and will be shipping its care packages to Soldiers’ Angels in Pasadena, Calif., who will in turn be sending those packages overseas.
The Marysville American Legion Hall is located at 119 Cedar Ave. For more information on donating to the care packages of joining the Ladies Auxiliary, you may call Smith at 360-659-1537.
