A Marysville man was treated for smoke inhalation on the evening of June 28 after rescuing several dogs from a fire that destroyed his home east of Highway 9 on Getchell Hill in unincorporated Snohomish County.

The man lived in the 8800 block of 132nd St. NE and spotted fire coming from the roof while he was outside in his yard. According to Fire District 22 Chief Travis Hots, smoke from the fire could be seen more than 10 miles away.

Fire District 22 personnel were joined by members of the Marysville, Tulalip, Arlington, Lake Stevens and Granite Falls fire departments in responding to the fire, which also damaged two motor homes and took the lives of at least two dogs that the Marysville man was unable to save. The man ran inside the house to rescue the rest of the dogs and was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Gary Bontrager, an investigator for the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office, said that the man saw the fire around the kitchen stove, while Hots noted that the absence of fire hydrants in that unincorporated area of the county required responders to truck in their own water.
