MARYSVILLE — A 50-year-old Marysville man’s death from being struck by a train Oct. 8 is still under investigation, according to officials.

The train struck the man at 10:45 p.m., 75 yards from a gated crossing at 228th Street, while it was traveling from Portland to Canada at approximately 44 miles per hour.

According to Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesperson Gus Melonas, the crew said they blew the whistle and put on the emergency brake of the northbound freight train, as the man walked onto the tracks, but they still couldn’t stop from hitting him.

The track was reopened at 4 a.m. Oct. 9, but police are still investigating the death. According to Melonas, this was the 11th death-by-train in Washington this year in which one or more people had trespassed on train tracks, away from train crossings.
