MARYSVILLE – Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring is pleased to announce longtime Seeds of Grace Food Bank volunteer June Hanvold as the community’s Volunteer of the Month for October.

Hanvold has volunteered at Allen Creek Community Church’s successful Seeds of Grace Food Bank for more than seven years, one of a handful of food banks in Marysville that see to the needs of less fortunate community members throughout the year and around the holidays. The food bank currently serves more than 180 families a week.

“Seeds of Grace would not function without June’s commitment to serve those who need a helping hand,” Mayor Nehring said when recognizing Hanvold at the Nov. 8 City Council meeting, which was attended by co-volunteers and well-wishers.

Hanvold was recognized as a “quiet leader.” She coordinates and drives to all four food pickup sites during the week and is involved in sorting and prep work on the Thursday and Saturday distribution days at the food bank, Nehring said. She coordinates the tasks and manages all the other 16 volunteers.

It is not unusual for her to work over 40 hours a week, wrote Blake Paine, Community Center Director at Allen Creek Community Church in his nomination form. “I have never heard her complain, and age never seems to interfere with getting the job done, or her attitude.”

Securing and keeping the food accounts has been a difficult endeavor, and the relationships that Hanvold developed have been key in retaining the food the church needs to serve Marysville families. Without those relationships the food bank would be able to serve very few people.

“Marysville is filled with unsung heroes deserving of this award, who give their time humbly without expecting anything in return,” the Mayor said. “The good works she is providing are an inspiration to the entire community.”
