MARYSVILLE – City of Marysville street crews are installing a walkway along the narrow 83rd Avenue NE where many students walk on their way to and from Marysville Getchell High School.

The $20,000 project includes installation of a five-foot wide asphalt shoulder along the south side of 83rd from the sidewalk at the intersection with Ingraham Boulevard and extending 400 feet south along 83rd, said Jeff Laycock, City Project Manager. The city and School District are sharing in the cost.

Since the new high school opened in September, students have had to step carefully along a ribbon of sloping gravel or walk out on the roadway to get to and from school, Laycock said. “The new asphalt shoulder will provide a safer route for students, pedestrians and motorists.”

Final paving could occur by the end of this week or early next week, depending on the weather. In the interim, detours are posted and backups can be expected, especially at the start and end of school days. Flaggers will be onsite, and traffic will be limited one lane only, guiding directional traffic alternately through the work zone.
