MARYSVILLE – Too much, too little, too late, but the young Marysville Getchell girls basketball team will try again next year.
In their District 3A Tournament loser-out game Feb. 17, the Chargers ended the game with a 10-0 run, but still fell to Shorewood 54-39.
MG outscored the Thunderbirds 18-8 in the final period, after changing to a pressing man-to-man defense and having a sense of urgency on offense.
Junior guard Gabrielle Grandbois led the way with her outside shooting, swishing in four three-pointers. She had 14 points in the fourth quarter, on her way to a 21-point night.
Freshman post Mikail Montez led the Spartan inside game, scoring 11 points.
But MG was facing a team that was taller and stronger with an impressive inside game with 6-foot-2 inch junior Taryn Shelley, and 6-foot seniors Jasmine Pollard and Lily Gustafson. And they had two other 6-foot sophomores coming off the bench.
Shorewood got off to an 8-0 lead midway through the first quarter, but MG used its quickness advantage on defense to get steals and force turnovers. Montez’s jumper at the end of the period cut the lead to 14-7.
With some blocked shot and cleaning up the boards, Shelley put the visitors ahead at halftime 27-17. MG stayed in the game with quick, crisp passing in an inside-out offense. Grandbois and Montez led the way with seven points each.
Shorewood put the game away in the third period, outscoring MG 19-4. Shorewood showed it also can score from the outside as junior Jalyn Hizey bombed in a couple three-pointers. The T-birds also were adept at shooting free throws, expanding their margin to 46-21 after three periods.
By pressuring Shorewood’s guards in the last period, MG made its comeback.
For the home team, sophomore Maguire Rossnagle scored a three-pointer, sophomore Oshinaye Taylor tallied two free throws, and junior Carley Wika connected on a bank shot, all in the first half.
