MARYSVILLE – The school board will be voting on a resolution Monday night pressing the state legislature to fully fund public education.
The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the district school office building.
Key points include:
• The State Constitution mandates that it is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders.
• The legislature has been ordered by the state Supreme Court to fully provide ample funding no later than the 2017–18 school year.
• The education of our students cannot afford any more state delays.
The proposal would urge state officials to promptly and fully comply with the Supreme Court’s orders in the McCleary case, the one against the state asking for full funding.
The resolution also states that ample funding means considerably more than just adequate. It says education is the state’s first and highest priority
before any other programs or operations. And it says the education funding plan must include the actual cost recruiting and retaining competent teachers, administrators, and staff, and the actual cost of constructing facilities required to reduce K-3 class sizes to 17 students.
The Supreme Court last year ruled the state in contempt of court for the legislature’s repeated failure to produce a plan, and is fining the state $100,000 a day for not doing so.
“We expect citizens and students in our school district to obey the law, and we should expect no less of our state officials,” the resolution says.
The council also will be deciding on 10 trip requests totalling almost $51,600, ranging from $22,532 for a fifth-grade camp on Bainbridge Island to $1,096 for math professional development in Santa Rosa.
During the prior work session, the school board will hear from manager Tracy Souza and staff about the Early Childhood Education and Assistant Program.
