MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Rotary Education Foundation awarded $52,000 in scholarships to 28 students from the Marysville and Lakewood school districts, and beyond, during their 2009 Scholarship Awards Ceremony, May 27 at 7 p.m., at Cedarcrest Middle School.

Marysville Rotary Education Foundation Chair Daryn Bundy explained that the annual ceremony had been moved to the evening to make it easier for the scholarship recipients’ family members and friends to attend.

“Today, we honor students from all walks of life,” Bundy said. “Students who have achieved high honors in the classroom, as well as those who have overcome great odds just to graduate. We congratulate you all on your achievements.”

Don Whitfield presented scholarships of $1,000 each to Marysville-Pilchuck High School seniors James Randall, who plans to major in mechanical engineering at Brigham Young University, and Jessica Jeffrey, who plans to major in special education at Western Washington University.

M-PHS senior Amanda Edenholm will be attending William Penn University on a bowling scholarship, while fellow M-PHS senior Andrea Rasmussen plans to major in intercultural studies at Biola University. Both students were presented with $1,000 scholarships by Larry Trivett.

Steve Muller presented a $1,000 scholarship to Marysville Mountain View High School senior Robyn Woodbury, who plans to get an associate’s degree at Everett Community College, before attending the University of Washington, to major in either sociology or psychology. Muller then presented a $2,000 scholarship, with an option for a second-year renewal, to Marysville Mountain View High School senior Philip Klein, who Philip Klein, who plans on getting an associate’s degree in business, and studying auto mechanics, at Skagit Valley Community College.

On behalf of the GAC and the Education Foundation, Bundy and Bob Banks presented scholarships of $1,000 each to M-PHS seniors Anna Nikolova and Nicholas Forsythe, and M-PHS junior Kate Landry. Nikolova will be studying tourism and hospitality at Edmonds Community College, while Forsythe will study medicine and dentistry at Pacific Lutheran University. Landry expects to major in psychology, and minor in chemistry, at the University of Washington, after she graduates high school.

Wayne Zachry presented scholarships of $2,000 each to M-PHS seniors Taylor Fix and Jessica Schnell, and Lakewood High School senior Jeremy Webb. Fix ultimately plans to attend Washington State University or Gonzaga University to become a nurse anesthesiologist, while Schnell, who received her scholarship on behalf of Glen and Eileen Zachry, looks forward to a career in human services after attending Western Washington University. Webb will be attending the University of Washington.

Gary Baker presented scholarships of $2,000 each to M-PHS seniors Angela Mero, Marissa Schafer and Emily Boerger, the latter on behalf of himself and Darcy Baker. Mero looks forward to studying psychology, while Schafer is looking at studying nursing at the University of Washington, and Boerger plans to study environmental science at Western Washington University.

Chris Nation presented scholarships of $2,000 each to M-PHS senior Amy Famelos, on behalf of the Monty Parrott Memorial, and LHS senior Nikolay Borisov, on behalf of Terry and Cheryle Earnheart. Famelos will be attending Western Washington University, while Borisov will be attending Northwest University. Jerry Campbell then presented a $2,000 scholarship, on behalf of himself and Sue Campbell, to M-PHS senior Lila Hart, who plans to major in communications at Washington State University.

On behalf of Kelly and Kristi Peterson, Kelly Peterson presented M-PHS senior Kara Lohberg with a $2,000 scholarship. Lohberg plans to attend Brigham Young University and become a teacher of history and English. And on behalf of himself and Julie Kron, Kim Kron presented M-PHS senior Kelly Opel with a $2,000 scholarship. Opel plans to major in art history, and minor in French, at the University of Washington.

LHS senior Peyton Mizell was attending a golf tournament, and thus not present to personally accept a $2,000 scholarship, presented by Daryn Bundy on behalf of the Quast Foundation. M-PHS senior Cassandra Kelsey, however, was present to accept a $2,000 scholarship, presented by Tom Thetford on behalf of himself and Janet Keefe. Kelsey plans to attend Pacific Lutheran University.

The Jubie family presented the rest of the scholarships. On behalf of himself and Linda Jubie, Larry Jubie presented a $2,000 scholarship to M-PHS senior Alyssa Zeigler, who plans to study genetic counseling at Western Washington University, and a $3,000 scholarship to M-PHS senior Taylor Olsen, who plans to attend the University of Washington. Larry Jubie then presented LHS senior Morgan Stewart with a $3,000 scholarship, on behalf of the Pat McGee Memorial. Stewart hopes to become a teacher of history and Spanish after attending the University of Washington.

On behalf of himself and Jan Jubie, Harv Jubie presented a $2,000 scholarship to M-PHS senior Megan Rogers, who ultimately plans to attend Western Washington University and become an elementary school educator, as well as a $3,000 scholarship to Grace Academy senior Jasleen Kaler, who plans to major in English at Washington State University. Harv Jubie then presented LHS senior Jessica LaPlante with a $3,000 scholarship, on behalf of Gordon and Carol Bjorg. LaPlante is heading off to Everett Community College with the ultimate goal of become a secondary school teacher.
