MARYSVILLE – Marysville School District Superintendent Becky Berg has dropped out of the running to be the new superintendent of the Snohomish School District.
Berg was one of three finalists for the job.
She visited the Snohomish schools and interviewed with the school board and met with the public there March 23.
“The Snohomish School District and the Marysville School District both have wonderful staff, teachers, and students,” Berg said. “As I was going through the interview process, I continued to think about our ongoing work on behalf of Marysville students and their families, and the excitement we are experiencing both in our classrooms and in the community.
“With all this momentum, I feel my work here is not done,” Berg added. “The true opportunity in front of us today is building upon our efforts and ensuring each of our students have the educational resources and 21st century tools they need to be successful. I look forward to continuing my work at the Marysville School District.”
She did not give a reason for withdrawing, but did text school board member Tom Albright Sunday to give him the good news.
“It made my Easter,” he said.
Longtime Snohomish Superintendent Bill Mester is retiring in June from his $284,813-a-year job.
Now, Duluth Public Schools Superintendent Bill Gronseth from Minnesota and Helena Schools Superintendent Kent Kultgen from Montana are being considered.
The Snohomish School Board expects to discuss the hiring behind closed doors March 29.
Board President Pete Lundberg is glad she is staying.
“Superintendent Berg has truly strengthened The Marysville School District,” he said. “The foundation has been laid and our board and leadership team is thrilled to carry that strength forward together with Dr. Berg.”
