Pressure-free gym helps members relax

MARYSVILLE – If you haven't worked out since high school or just don't like the high-testosterone he-man attitude at many gyms, a new one in Marysville may be just the thing to get you going.

MARYSVILLE – If you haven’t worked out since high school or just don’t like the high-testosterone he-man attitude at many gyms, a new one in Marysville may be just the thing to get you going.

It’s called Planet Fitness, and its claim to fame is its Judgment Free Zone.

“It sets us apart,” club manager James Hessen said, adding many of their clients are “first-time gym users.”

Signs all around the facility stress that there is no gym intimidation. Such as with the weights – “no one is going to show off and go above you,” Hessen said. They even have special events that include pizza and bagels.

The gym is set up more for general fitness than for big, muscular men and women. There are plenty of cardio machines and weights, but not the huge barbells and free weights.

“We’re not a gym, we’re Planet Fitness,” Hessen said, emphasizing their slogan.

It does all it can to make visitors as “comfortable as possible,” he added, including private showers.

Another special part of the gym is a 30-minute workout routine area for those short on time. A green light goes on for a minute as you go to each of 20 stations. The red light goes on for your 30-second resting period in-between.

Classes limited to just five people are available for only 30-minutes each on arms, legs, abs, shoulders, back and chest. Without having to pay extra for a trainer, one will also work with you on setting up an individual workout.

Since the business is new, cost is only $1 down and $10 a month until March 31, with no monthly contract, although there is an annual fee of $29 charged June 1.

PF also offers a Black Card for $1 down and $19.99 a month. It does require a 12-month contract. The annual fee is $39. It entitles members to unlimited use of message chairs, hydromassage and tanning beds, among other benefits.
