MARYSVILLE — Tess Raley and Jake Hereth have been named the Marysville Soroptimist and Kiwanis students of the month for January.

Raley has a 3.97 cumulative GPA and has taken AP classes in language and composition, biology, U.S. history and statistics, as well as honors and advanced classes in language arts, college algebra, Latin and physics. She will attend Pacific Lutheran University and has progressed undefeated to the final match of the International School of Communications debate tournament.

Raley has been involved in the Volunteer Club since her freshman year, the Video and Latin clubs since her sophomore year, and National Honor Society since her junior year. She also takes part in the International School of Communications Mentorship Program.

Raley is active in the Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption, and at the Marysville and Arlington food banks. She’s also been a Big Buddy since her sophomore year and a member of the Junior Classical League since her junior year.

Raley balances her school and volunteer work with tending to the needs of her mother, who developed epilepsy due to a benign tumor in her brain. Raley spends most of her free time driving her mother on errands, taking her to doctors’ appointments, researching her illness, learning her stress signs and studying first aid.

Hereth has a 3.8 cumulative GPA and has taken AP classes in language and composition, comparative politics and calculus. He’s received a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Distinguished Scholastic Award as a member of the varsity tennis team, and an admission with distinction from Western Washington University.

Hereth has been involved in the Marysville-Pilchuck High School Tennis Team since his freshman year, the M-PHS Baseball Team and the Random Acts of Kindness Everyday Club since his sophomore year, and National Honor Society, ASB and freshman mentoring since his junior year. He’s also participated in multiple inter-high school conferences.

Hereth has been active as a Big Buddy and as a volunteer for the Kellogg Marsh Elementary Carnival, the Special Needs Prom and the Halloween Fun Fest. He’s also served as co-chair for the Special Olympics Committee through National Honor Society, Junior Class Treasurer and ASB Vice President during his senior year.
