TULALIP — Even as the Marysville Rotary celebrated “A Night in Wine Country” at the Tulalip Resort Casino Nov. 7, its members reflected on the community’s recent tragedies.
Don Whitfield, chairman of the Rotary’s annual fundraising auction, reminded attendees of the lives lost in both the Oso slide and the Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting.
Gloria Kymn, pastor of the Marysville United Methodist Church, followed by acknowledging the community’s grief over “the heartbeats that stopped too soon and too young.”
Kymn praised the auction for “bringing healing to our community” through the generosity of donors and bidders.
Whitfield later reported the auction drew more than 300 attendees, who donated $46,100 to the Marysville Rotary Education Foundation, up $20,000 from last year. That money will be used to fund scholarships for local high school graduates. The gross income for the rest of the auction was $82,024.
Within the past year, the Rotary has supported the American Red Cross, Housing Hope, the Marysville YMCA, the Marysville Boys & Girls Club, the Marysville Community Food Bank and its holiday toy drive, and Kloz for Kidz. Rotary has also joined the Marysville Historical Society in supporting a community center, which is under construction.
“We could not pull this off without you,” Marysville Rotary President Deirdre Kvangnes said. “After the last couple of weeks, I’m honored to be part of the Marysville community.”
The foundation provided more than $60,000 over the past year to fund college scholarships and help local schools with education grants for equipment and special projects. Rotary’s annual “Pumpkins for Literacy” provided more than $20,000 to literacy projects.
“No matter what you’ve accomplished, someone helped you,” said Gayl Spilman, president of the foundation.
