MARYSVILLE — The city of Marysville is enacting its annual weed-spraying program and summer lawn-watering restrictions.

The city of Marysville Public Works Department concluded the last week of May by commencing its annual weed-spraying program, to control pesky weeds along city curbs, sidewalks, traffic islands and main arterials throughout the city.

Public Works crews, using state-certified applicators, are spraying professional herbicide for industrial, turf and ornamental weed control throughout the city, using Crossbow and Roundup PRO, according to Burt Gunderson, street maintenance supervisor for the city of Marysville.

Weather permitting, crews will work through June, using these low-risk, EPA-approved household-type products, to control weed proliferation and blackberry brambles that can lead to decay and deterioration of sidewalks and public rights of way. Gunderson also pointed out how such weeds and brambles can be an eyesore for the community.

Limits on lawn-watering restrictions

Annual summer lawn-watering restrictions took effect at the start of June, to encourage Marysville-area utility customers to be water-smart this summer, when rolling out their hoses and turning on their sprinklers.

The city of Marysville recently mailed the 2009 Summer Lawn-Watering Calendar to utility customers. To use the calendar, customers only need to match the last two digits in their house addresses with one of the calendar’s three colors — green for 00-15, yellow for 16-32 or blue for 33-99 — and water on those assigned days only.

Marysville has implemented the state-mandated annual lawn-watering program since 1990. It applies during the months of June through September.

Water systems the size of Marysville’s or larger are required by the state Department of Ecology and Department of Health to include water conservation plans in their long-range utility planning, according to Doug Buell, community information officer for the city. Marysville serves water to more than 16,400 households and businesses.
