MARYSVILLE — The Marysville chapter of Soroptimist International has named its Students of the Month for January and February.

Albert Castro and Taylor Olsen are the Students of the Month for January, and Trevor LeValley and Jenna Welsh are the Students of the Month for February.

January

Castro was recognized as an outstanding junior and received a certificate of achievement in 11th grade, before receiving the career and technical education student of the quarter award in 12th grade. In 11th grade, he was enrolled in college algebra, AP language and composition, and chemistry, and in 12th grade, he’s enrolled in calculus, AP literature and composition, and advanced biology. His current GPA is 3.9.

Castro was a member of the Spanish Club in 10th grade and the Japanese Club in 11th and 12th grade, serving as treasurer and then vice president of the latter. In 12th grade, he’s a member of National Honor Society and the Biotech Club. He’s helped out with Oktoberfest and the Halloween Fun Fest, and has helped raise funds for several of his clubs.

From 10th through 12th grade, Castro has been a member of the Minority Achievers Program at the Marysville YMCA, through which he’s collected for the Marysville Community Food Bank and tutored elementary and middle school students. In July of last year, he volunteered in Providence Hospital’s summer camp program, and starting in November of last year, he’s acted as a “Big Buddy” to a student at Grove Elementary.

Olsen was enrolled in the gifted programs for language arts and Washington state and world geography in ninth grade, language arts honors in 10th grade, and AP language and composition and college chemistry in 11th grade, when she also received an athletic scholar award for volleyball. In 12th grade, she’s enrolled in AP literature, AP calculus and AP comparative politics.

Olsen is a National Honor Society member who serves as an underclassman mentor in 12th grade. She’s been a member of her high school volleyball teams for four years, playing on junior varsity in 10th grade and varsity in 11th and 12th grade, and was a member of her school tennis teams from ninth through 11th grade, playing on varsity in 10th and 11th grade. She volunteered for the Halloween Fun Fest in 10th grade, “You’ve Gotta Love This Place” in 10th through 12th grade, the Random Acts of Kindness Everyday Club in 11th and 12th grade, and the PTSA for four years of high school.

Olsen took part in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in Mississippi in 10th grade, city of Adna flood relief in 11th grade, the Providence Hospital summer camp program in 11th and 12th grade, and support for the homeless in San Francisco in 12th grade. She volunteered at a women and children’s homeless shelter in 10th and 11th grade, and at the YMCA in 11th grade. She’s organized and hosted dinners as part of Eagle Wing in ninth through 11th grade, and served weekly meals through the Salvation Army in 12th grade. She’s also worked as a “Big Buddy,” and in assisting the physically and mentally disabled at local elementary schools, in 12th grade.

Olsen has served as freshman and sophomore class president, as a junior class student representative, and as a Volleyball Club captain. In ninth grade, she coordinated the pep assembly and talent show, and in 10th grade, she coordinated the baby-sitting night and the battle of the bands. She went to Cispus Leadership Camp in ninth grade, was a member of Building Leadership in 10th grade and participated in Jostens leadership conferences in 10th and 11th grade.

February

LeValley has taken AP courses in calculus, comparative politics, chemistry, language and composition, literature and U.S. history, along with courses in physics and college algebra. He has been nominated for the Washington State Regents Scholarship, received a 2007 Wesco Academic Achievement Certification, and scored a 3.92 GPA, as well as a 670 on reading, a 700 on math and a 570 on writing on his SAT. He’s been named a Scholastic All-American three times, from 2006-2009, and was named one of the “top 10 juniors” by the Marysville Freemasons in 2008.

LeValley did one year each in track and field and cross country, going to districts and earning a letter in the latter. He did four years in swimming and diving, earning letters and going to districts and state four times each, serving as captain of his 70 swim and dive teammates, setting three Marysville-Pilchuck High School records and earning consideration for an All-American title, the latter in 2008. He also did Knowledge Bowl for a year and went to districts.

LeValley was involved for three years each in the Mighty Marlins Swim Club, wetland tree planting, Hatchetfish and PNS Zones. He was named “most outstanding” on the Mighty Marlins three times, from 2005-2008, served as assistant coach of the Hatchetfish and served as captain of his 80 teammates on PNS Zones, who earned a first-place team award during that time. He also volunteered for Operation Marysville Community Christmas.

Welsh is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and the Dean’s List Honor Roll, the latter from 2005-2009. She has received a U.S. Army Reserves National Scholar Athlete Award, was named outstanding editor of the issue for The Marshfield Times of Coos Bay, Ore., and was recognized for an outstanding performance in forensics at Marshfield High School.

Welsh has served as Bio-Med ASB secretary and senior representative, ASB lunch activities committee chair, a student council representative and the Naval Junior ROTC platoon commander and platoon representative for the Lions Club. She’s been involved in sports medicine, the Biotech Club, the Key Club, RAKE and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She’s participated in annual food drives, blood drives and Veterans Day assemblies, and is part of YGLTP. She’s played on varsity volleyball for three years and varsity track and field for four years. She’s also a “Big Buddy,” founder of Flag of Four Planes and organizer of Safe-Rave Revolution.
