MARYSVILLE Dane Hansen and Megan Crenshaw were selected students of the year by the Marysville Kiwanis and Soroptimists at their annual awards breakfast June 1.
The two were valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, at Marysville-Pilchuck High School graduation ceremonies last week and were honored with scholarships and praise. Five other students received valuable help with their college plans as well.
Crenshaw was honored with a $1,500 scholarship to help her with studies in political science and communications at Washington State University, where was awarded a Regents Scholarship.
This is an amazing young girl, said Foy Cordner, citing Crenshaws 3.99 grade point average. She was also homecoming queen and senior class president.
Hansen was lauded by for his near-prefect grade point average marred only by a single A-.
We are very proud to name Dane as our student of the year, said Mike McGee. This has been a busy guy. We really dont have enough time to run over everything hes done.
Amanda Racine was awarded the National Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Award by Carol Biegler, who cited the seniors leadership of the 56 students in the program and her contribution of 53 hours of community service, including leading the No. 1 color guard and drill team. Racine also earned letters in all JROTC teams, Biegler added.
Laura Stogin earned the Vocational Technical Scholarship, presented by Soroptimist member Mary Jane Miller. Stogin plans to work in sports medicine as a physicians assistant or nurse with a sports team.
I get to spend lots of time with athletes, Stogin explained, estimating that she has spent 3,000 hours at high school events.
Nina Nikolova plans to manufacture sports wear for a living, an interest that grew out of her love of dance. Gym rats wear leotards just like dancers and Nikolova plans to launch her own line of action wear.
I spend lots of time dancing, she said.
The M-P senior won a $1,000 scholarship. Other recipients of Soroptimist Scholarships were:
Nancy Couls, a volleyball ace who will study to be a pharmacist at Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, Ariz. She said one of her favorite memories in high school was the annual Christmas party the marketing students throw for the special needs students at M-P.
Nicol Banal, who plans to study nursing at the University of Washington. At first she considered a career in engineering but since the Veterans Administration needs nurses she made the switch.
The Soroptimists also honored Kathy Brooks with the Womens Opportunity Award. Brooks is studying at Everett Community College to earn a psychology degree and plans to help at-risk teens at the Denny Youth Center.
The Marysville Soroptimists have raised more than $40,000 this year in conjunction with the Kiwanis by holding a pancake breakfast at a motorcycle dealership and the annual Junktique rummage sale, said President Carol Brown. In addition to the annual scholarship bequests and their work with Operation Marysville Community Christmas, this year the Soroptimist launched Operation Backpack to provide supplies for children removed the meth houses.
