MARYSVILLE — Sound Salmon Solutions will once again be seeking to save salmon by planting and tending to trees along Allen Creek on Saturday, Sept. 22.

From 10 a.m. to noon at an exact location that’s still being determined, volunteers will work to make Allen Creek an ideal habitat for salmon by planting trees and shrubs to help provide shade to cool the water, prevent erosion and provide food for the small insects that juvenile salmon eat.

The trees will also help shade out invasive species such as Reed Canary Grass and Himalayan Blackberry.

Volunteers will also be called upon to place plant protectors and mulch around the newly planted trees and shrubs.

Sound Salmon Solutions’ goal is to make Allen Creek ready for when it becomes accessible again for salmon spawning in 2013, when part of the levee is set to be removed along the Snohomish River.

This project is sponsored not only by Sound Salmon Solutions, but also by the Adopt-A-Stream Foundation, the state Department of Ecology, the Snohomish Conservation District, the Tulalip Tribes and the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
