MARYSVILLE – After a four and a half hour stand-off, police were able to take a Marysville man into custody who had barricaded himself in his apartment.

At about 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 12, a 52-year-old man residing in an apartment in the 900 block of Columbia Avenue went downstairs and knocked on the door of another tenant, Marysville police said.

After the resident, a woman in her late 60s, answered the door, the man forced his way in and began yelling at her, says Cmdr. Ralph Krusey. A neighbor witnessed the incident, and alleged that the suspect carried a hammer at his side. The victim felt frightened, and feared for her safety.

Marysville Police were dispatched to the incident. When they arrived, responding officers observed the suspect go into an apartment carrying the hammer. When he emerged, he still had the hammer. As officers approached the suspect he retreated into the apartment, and as he did so he armed himself with a kitchen knife. The suspect closed his door and refused to answer when officer knocked.

Marysville officer attempts to talk the suspect out of the apartment in the apartment were unsuccessful, Krusey says.

Marysville Police requested the assistance of the Snohomish County Tactical Entry Team. A search warrant was obtained for burglary, and Snohomish County Sheriff’s Deputies served it. Officers continued to talk to the suspect but he would not come out of the apartment.

After an attempt to use pepper gas was unsuccessful, Less Lethal Force was deployed and the suspect was taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies at approximately 6:30 p.m. The suspect was released to Marysville Police, treated for minor injuries and subsequently booked into the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of burglary.
