MARYSVILLE — A 29-year-old Florida man has been arrested in connection with the robbery of a US Bank branch in Marysville earlier this month.

The Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory made a positive identification of the man from evidence gathered at the scene of the Aug. 9 robbery inside the Albertson’s grocery store at 11410 State Ave., while detectives developed information that the man was temporarily staying with a family at their residence in the Lake Stevens area.

Marysville Police detectives drove to the Lake Stevens-area residence and waited for the man to leave the residence, after which he was taken into custody on Aug. 19 without further incident and booked into the Snohomish County Jail for robbery in the first degree.

The State Patrol Crime Lab found a thumbprint on a note that the robber had handed to a bank teller, which began with the words, “My partner is in the parking lot with a police radio. If you hit the alarm, he will know and start shooting. I am armed as well.” The note instructed the teller to give the robber $100,000 in $100 bills within 30 seconds, and concluded with the words, “You can call the cops five minutes after I leave. If you call before then my partner will know and start shooting. Give me this note back. Your time starts now.”

The teller handed over the money but kept the note, whose thumbprint matched that of the suspect.

Detectives matched the person caught on video surveillance of the robbery to a booking photo of the suspect from Florida in December of last year, before they learned that the suspect’s food stamp card had been used in Lake Stevens on the afternoon of the robbery.

At his bail hearing on Aug. 22, the man chose to represent himself, much to the surprise of his court-appointed lawyer, Bill Jaquette, who explained that the man challenged the jurisdiction of the court based on arguments that Jaquette didn’t understand. District Court Judge Roger Fisher held the man’s bail at $250,000.
