MARYSVILLE — At approximately 7:20 p.m. Feb. 10, Marysville Fire District personnel responded to the scene of a house fire at the 6300 block of 23rd Avenue NE.
Initial dispatch reports told of an elderly woman trapped with oxygen tanks in close proximity, and emergency response units found a single-story wood frame structure with flames and smoke visible.
Crews immediately attempted to rescue the elderly woman, but the fire was too hot. After putting more water on the fire, they were able to get into the home to remove her, but unfortunately, the conditions inside the home proved to be fatal for her.
Family members had attempted to rescue the woman, and suffered minor burns on their hands, as well as smoke inhalation.
Three engine companies, three aid and medic units, one ladder company and a battalion chief were called to the scene. Approximately 20 emergency crew members responded.
The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office conducted an investigation. The fire has been ruled accidental and was determined to have been caused by ignition of the victim’s clothes, after lighting a cigarette while breathing oxygen via a nasal canula.
