MARYSVILLE – Fourteen citizens applied to fill the vacancy on the City Council to succeed Councilmember Jon Nehring, who stepped down when he was appointed to serve as Mayor last August. Of those, one applicant has since dropped out.
The application process ended on Sept. 8. Candidates will be interviewed individually at the Sept. 27 City Council meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 2nd Floor in City Hall, 1049 State Ave. The Council hopes to make a decision that evening so that the appointed nominee can be sworn in and seated immediately.
The successful candidate will need to file for office in the next general municipal elections in November 2011 to retain the seat, and then would fulfill the remainder of the four-year term of the position, which ends on Dec. 31, 2013.
The candidate pool features a wide array of political and business experience ranging from political newcomers to a former City Councilmember and Planning Commissioners.
Here is a snapshot of the nominees:
• Kay Smith, who served on the Marysville Fire Board of Directors from 1994-2009, was recently appointed to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and serves as President of the local American Legion Auxiliary.
• Michael Stevens, an Associate Principal with Dykeman Architects in Everett, and Marysville Planning Commission member since May 2008.
• John Myers, a small-business owner and former Air Force member who served on the City Council from January 1992 to June 1998. He is a current longtime member of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Marysville Rotary Club.
• Steve Muller, a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones Investments since 1999, Planning Commission Chairman, past Chair and member on several boards including the YMCA, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and Historical Society.
• Nathan Shelby, a Systems Engineer with the Snohomish Health District and Little League Baseball volunteer umpire for 13 years.
• Steven Hellyer, Systems Engineer with the Health District who has served on the Sno-Isle Skills Center Professional Advisory for several years.
• Quinn King, who has worked for the Tulalip Resort Casino in Security since 2002, and ran unsuccessfully for City Council last year.
• Brittney Linville, a National Park Service employee in Sedro-Woolley and former Army Military Police Officer in Fort Hood, Texas, who moved with family to Marysville in 2008.
• Blair Anderson, a former legislative assistant to State Rep. Mike Hope who currently works as a Customer Service Ambassador for Community Transit, whose civic involvement includes serving as Past-President and member of the Greater Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce Board.
• Marvetta Toler, a licensed Realtor with Prudential Northwest Realty whose civic service includes committees within the Marysville School District and the Snohomish County Citizens for Human Rights Commission.
• Robert Wicks Jr., a semi-retired Architect who has previously served on the City’s Planning Commission, Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce, and Marysville Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs.
• Matthew Chapman, a longtime Marysville resident and political newcomer employed in the health care industry, with an interest in giving back to the community.
• Rob Toyer, President of Toyer Wealth Management, a former U.S. Marine, and member of the Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Snohomish Connections Le Tip group and Snohomish County Young Professionals Network.
• Tom King, a city of Marysville traffic systems employee/electrician and former School Board member who has held several officer and member positions for Kiwanis, the Library Board, Friends of the Marysville Library and Snohomish County Parks Advisory Board. He is the nominee who dropped out after applying.
