UPDATE | Weekend closure for SR 9 intersection cancelled

Local drivers who use State Route 9 or State Route 92 will not need to take detours during the upcoming weekend, since the closures that had been scheduled for those intersections have been cancelled.

Local drivers who use State Route 9 or State Route 92 will not need to take detours during the upcoming weekend, since the closure that had been scheduled for the intersection of those two roads has been cancelled.

Crews had planned to completely close the SR 9/SR 92 intersection from 10 p.m. Friday, June 29, to 4:30 a.m. Monday, July 2, to excavate along the shoulders, grade, repave and restripe the highway, and install new guardrails, but that work has been rescheduled for a later date.

“Weekend closures — especially during the summer — can be a challenge for drivers who just want to get out of town,” WSDOT Project Engineer Seema Javeri said of the now-postponed road closure. “If drivers can be patient with us for a weekend, this closure will allow us to get a huge amount of work done – and that will mean fewer nighttime lane closures during the rest of the summer.”

Detour signs would have redirected traffic along local roads in Snohomish County and the city of Lake Stevens during the weekend-long intersection closure.

Travelers will have a new southbound through lane on SR 9, an extra left-turn lane to southbound SR 9 and an extra left-turn lane to eastbound SR 92 after the delayed intersection closure eventually takes place.

Beyond the immediate congestion relief, this project will prepare the SR 9/SR 92 intersection for future expansion to an even more efficient four-way intersection. WSDOT has partnered with the city of Marysville to add features at the intersection to allow for a proposed road to connect to SR 9 from the west.
