Anna Evelyn Carter Lewis, 88, formerly of Camano Island, Wash., died peacefully Thursday, July 26, at Skagit Valley Hospital, Mount Vernon, Wash., with family members at her bedside.
She was born in Jamestown, N.D., March 9, 1919, and educated in a one-room school in Medina, N.D.
Following graduation she came to visit family in Washington, where she met and later married Berkley V. Lewis of Mercer Island, Wash., on December 7, 1941. The couple had celebrated 61 years of marriage when Mr. Lewis passed in May of 2003.
A hard working and independent woman, she and her husband owned and operated K and L Arms, Mercer Island. After her children were grown, she was employed by JC Penny of Seattle, Wash., and retired in 1978, to enjoy her love of gardening on Camano Island and winters on Maui, Hawaii. She was also a Daughter of the Nile, Hatasu Temple No. 1.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Fay Jablonski, of Medina, N.D.
Anna is survived by a sister, Joy Chapman, of Boise, Idaho; son, Everett and daughter-in-law, Karen Lewis, of Arlington, Wash,; daughter, Margaret and son-in-law, Gregg Putnam, of Ravensdale, Wash.; grandsons, Jason (Anne) Lewis, and Eric (Kim) Putnam; and granddaughter, Ann (Bill) Johnson; five great-grandsons, Slone and Bradley Lewis, Eli Foreman, Clifford and Daniel Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.
The family gathered to celebrate her life at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at the home of Everett and Karen Lewis, in Arlington. The ashes of she and her husband will be interred near Medina, N.D., later this Fall.
