Margret Inga (Goodman) Hammond of Marysville, WA died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, September 17, 2009. Margret was born in Seattle in 1918. She and her family moved to Sumner, WA the following year. Margret was a member of Sumner HS’s graduating class of 1936. She attended the University of Puget Sound and later the University of Washington, graduating with a BA in Nursing in 1942. Margret was a proud member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority at the UW.
While at UPS, Margret met her biology lab partner and future husband, Charles Hammond. They married in 1943. In those early years, Margret was employed as a surgical nurse in Seattle hospitals and as an instructor at the UW School of Nursing while Charles attended the UW Medical School. In 1950, Margret retired as an RN to devote herself fully to her growing family. Whitney was their first-born, followed by Curtis, Craig and Gretchen.
Active in community and school affairs, Margret served on various committees and boards, including the Visiting Nurses Assoc, Snohomish Cty Blood Bank, Everett General Hospital Guild, Everett Book Club, and the General Hospital Pediatric Assoc. A passionate gardener, who also enjoyed golf and tennis, Margret loved all family activities, boating, skiing, summers at the Tulalip Bay beach house, and winters at the Stevens Pass ski cabin. After many wonderful years of living at the beach house, Margret and Charles moved into a retirement home on Mercer Island to be closer to family.
Margret was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Charles Allison Hammond, MD, who passed away in November 2008. Son, Whitney Hammond and his wife, Marilyn, of Homer, AK, also predeceased Margret.
Margret is survived by sons, Curtis (Maureen) Hammond and Craig (Sheila) Hammond, both of Mercer Island, and daughter, Gretchen (Alan) Taylor of Bellingham. Grandchildren, Whitney (Hana) Hammond, Boulder, CO, Kristin (Ian) O’Hearn, Kirkland; Matthew and Courtney Hammond, Mercer Island; Allison (Edward) Switaj, Ryan and Stephanie Hammond, Mercer Island; Hannah and Haakon Taylor, Bellingham.
Memorial service and reception will be held at 11 AM on Friday, September 25, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 4312 84th ST NE, Marysville, WA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Providence General Children’s Assoc, PO Box 1147, Everett, WA, 98206, or a charity of your choice.
