Marian Elsie Williams Buchanan

Marian Elsie Williams Buchanan, “Mom B”, at 95 years 5 months, calmly passed away Dec. 23, 2009 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Jeannine and Alan Lish, near Arlington, WA.

Marian was born July 20, 1914 to Frank Charles and Lena Christina Paton Williams in Milford, IA.

For three years, Marian taught fifth-grade in Arnolds Park, IA, before marrying Milford’s new doctor, John James “JJ” Buchanan, MD, from Bloomington, IN.

In the 1960s-80s, she was an Iowa State University housemother, resident advisor at Buchanan Hall and taught piano.

Most summers, Marian was at her W. Lake Okoboji, IA cottage.

Her husband preceded Marian in death in 1988.

Surviving are her two sisters, “Ava” Hedrick Bowman, 93, of Overland Park, KS, and “Betty” Hedrick, 91, of Mason City IA.

“Doc” and Marian had three children; Kay A. Buchanan-Eckman (Verne), of Milford, IA and Brandon, SD; John J. Buchanan, Jr, and Jeannine E.Lish (Alan) of Arlington, WA.

Marian also is survived by five grandchildren: Sherri Denoble (Jerry) of Spirit Lake, IA; Bobbi Kostinec (Rob) of Rochester, MN; Christopher Lish of Olema, CA; Erich Lish (Kellie) of Arlington and Gregory Lish of Issaquah, WA, seven great-grand children, many loving relatives and friends.

In her 21 years of active living in Washington state, she enjoyed singing with the “Stilly Singers” from the Stillaguamish Senior Center, was a member of Arlington United Church, and loved many types of musical performances, people, animals and nature.

Marian delighted in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and seeing them develop their individual talents and interests in music, art, sports, Scouts, academics, and helping others.

A celebration of her life will be Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, 2 p.m. at Arlington United Church, 4th & McLeod in downtown Arlington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Stillaguamish Senior Center or Arlington United Church.
