MILL CREEK — “It was a pitchers’ duel. A 1-0 game for three innings,” said Marysville Nationals manager Jeff Rosten. “Then the wheels fell off the bus.”

The 11-year-old all-star team that come from behind to defeat Granite Falls in their first-round game struggled to find some gaps in the Pacific outfield, falling to the Edmonds-area all-star team 10-0 in five innings.

Following the loss June 29 at Freedom Field in Mill Creek, the boys faced North Snohomish. The Snohomish and Marysville American all-stars had played the night before, that game still tied when it was called for time and resumed July 1 before Snohomish advanced.

Marysville Nationals play the winner four hours later that same day.

Against Pacific, Marysville Nationals led off with a hit by Jared Wade, but it was to be their only one. The boys had a chance to tie Pacific in the top of the fourth inning, as two players were hit by opposing pitcher Brady Edwards and Zack Barker walked. But Pacific’s defense held on with some nice plays, including a catch of Ben Chapman’s line drive that looked otherwise headed for right field.

“Every hit seemed to find a fielder,” Rosten said.

Pacific extended their lead to two runs in the bottom of the fourth, combining a triple and a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth inning, Marysville couldn’t get a break, as Pacific reeled off hit after hit to score eight runs and invoke the 10-run mercy rule.

Rosten said the team planned to regroup from the loss with a practice and review some of the details. He added that he hoped the win would be a wake-up call to the players.

“They have to know they can’t just show up and expect to win,” he said.
