ARLINGTON — A big game by Arlington senior Kyra Prause and supporting performances from the rest of the Eagle girls basketball team helped the Arlington girls avenge a loss to Marysville-Pilchuck a week earlier.
Prause’s 24 points led her team to a 52-42 win on Jan. 30 at Arlington High School.
After the Tomahawks scored 41 points from the post in their win a week earlier, the Eagles came up with a new plan for the rematch.
“We tried to play 2-3 and take away their post play,” said Arlington coach Nathan Davis.
Marysville led through the first quarter, a bucket at the buzzer from Dacia Heckendorf gave the Tomahawks a 13-10 lead. But Prause couldn’t be stopped, scoring 10 of the team’s 15 second-quarter points including one of two treys to close within a point and the go-ahead score just after, for a 22-21 lead. Six different players scored in the third quarter as Arlington turned a 25-24 halftime lead into a 10-point margin going into the fourth quarter.
“They packed in our post and we couldn’t shoot from outside,” said Marysville coach Julie Martin.
Nonetheless, Tomahawk senior post Britt Harris had a double-double, scoring 18 points and 17 rebounds.
In the fourth quarter, Arlington played like a well-oiled machine — rebound, pass, pass, bucket. On the other side of the ball, Marysville scored, but had trouble synching up like the Arlington team that matched them point for point to hold on for the 10-point win.
Heckendorf was the only player on either side of the ball to join Prause and Harris in double-digit scoring, with 10 points. However, Arlington freshmen Kaiti Ferro and Stephanie Schmuck combined for eight points and notable minutes defending the paint.
“It was not intended at all,” Davis said. “They were just doing a great job and I kept them in.”
