While the USA Roller Sports Indoor Speed Skating National Championships took place halfway across the country in Peoria, Ill., at least three of the nation’s top inline skaters live in the Arlington-Marysville area.

Fifteen-year-old Nick Dominski, a skater for Everett Express who will be a sophomore at Lakewood High School this fall, set a new national record in the Sophomore Men’s 500-meter race, finishing in a time of 45.901 seconds, beating the old record of 46.406 set by Joseph Burns of Arlington, Texas a year ago. He also placed third in the 1,000-meter race, taking home the gold in the Novice Sophomore Men’s category and helping the Northwest Region place first out of nine in the regional competition.

Marysville resident Jillian VanDam, who competes with Tiffany’s Speed Team in Puyallup, won gold in the Standard division’s Classic Ladies competition. In a contest consisting of a 500-, 1,000- and 1,500-meter race, VanDam won both of the longer events and placed second in the 500 to Mindy Smith from the Piedmont Speed Club in Greensboro, N.C. VanDam works in the Marysville court system and has been skating for 16 years.

Jammie Shull, a 25-year-old Arlington resident, like her Express teammate Dominski, competed in the Novice division, placing second in the Classic Ladies category. Shull won the 500 and placed a close second in the 1,000, just edged out by Christy Johnson, also of the Piedmont Speed Club.

The Everett Express team placed eighth overall out of 73 teams in the Novice category. The indoor speed skating national championships took place July 19-24 at the Peoria Civic Center.
