ARLINGTON — The Tomahawks were outlasted by an emotional Eagles team celebrating senior night.
Arlington 171-pounder Hayden Love’s 10-0 victory against Cole Cushing made an upset bid into a reality Jan. 28 in a 30-24 Wesco North loss.
“We’ve had a great season at 15-2,” said Marysville-Pilchuck coach Craig Iversen. “It’s sad to have to end the season on a loss, and to a rival, but we’re still excited and confident about districts.”
The Tomahawks (15-2, 6-2) had their chance, holding a 21-17 lead with just four matches to go, but couldn’t hold on.
“We knew it was going to be a very close match,” Iversen said. “It was going to come down to bonus points and who got pins.”
Scoring wins for the Tomahawks were Billy Almachar, who scored a 17-1 major decision at 103 pounds, Louis Cardona won the 112-pound match 16-9 and Ruben Escelante had one of just two pin falls the entire meet, doing so in 24 seconds at 119 pounds. Luke Schumaker scored a 9-1 major decision at 130 pounds, Brian Donaldson defeated Shawn Berg 4-0 at 140 pounds and Jake Carlton saw an early 2-0 lead through the second and third periods at 189 pounds.
The loss doesn’t change much for Iversen and Co. as they maintain second place, having won a tie-breaker with Everett, which is also 6-2 in the Wesco North.
Meanwhile, Arilngton coach Shaun Williams gave the Tommies some credit as being one of the more difficult challenges his team has overcome this season.
“I don’t think this is the best we’ve wrestled this year, because we’ve beaten some good teams, but it’s up there,” Williams said.
The district tournament, which is held at Marysville-Pilchuck, begins Feb. 5 at 4 p.m.
