ARLINGTON – Coach Joe Marsh has his girls basketball team again playing that physical, full-court trapping defense that drives opponents crazy as they can’t get into an offensive rhythm.
That style of play was evident as the Eagles beat Meadowdale 52-36 Tuesday night.
Junior guard Sierra Scheppele hit 3 of her 19 points to give Arlington the early lead. The aggressive Eagle defense led to steals and Meadowdale turnovers, along with some offensive fouls, right from the start. On defense the much-taller Mavericks played a zone defense, and Scheppele just shot over it, making another 3. Sophomore Josie Stupey’s steal and layup expanded the lead, and sophomore Hailey Hiatt’s long 3 at the buzzer made it 14-8 after the first quarter.
To open the second period, Hiatt hit a short jumper in the key off a fastbreak. But then Arlington went five minutes without scoring. Fortunately for the Eagles, the Mavs scored just 7 points during that cold streak, so when Stupey ended it with a free throw followed by another steal and layup the Eagles went back in front 19-15. Scheppele hit another 3 and Stupey had yet another steal and layup as the home team led 24-19 at halftime.
Both teams tallied just 9 points in the third quarter, but the Eagles ran away with it by outscoring the Mavs 19-8 in the final stanza.
Stupey ended the game with 12, Hiatt 9, Jordan Bartlow 4, Allison DeBerry and Abbey Hassing 3 each, and Makenzie Gage 2.
Meanwhile, at Marysville Getchell, the Chargers won 73-14 over Mountlake Terrace, which only had five players. Seven others on the roster were not even on the bench, but some were in the stands.
MG scored almost at will, especially in the second half, against the tired, shorter Hawk team, especially inside, where they grabbed many offensive rebounds.
Mikhail Montez had 16, Maddy Grandbois 12 and Kortney Crane, Maddison Hagglund and Alexus Atkins had 10 apiece. Kiki Green added 7, Brionna Palm 4, and Sydney Norton and Katie Powell scored 2 each.
In another girls game, Marysville-Pilchuck fell to Shorewood 39-24.
Miriah Summers scored 12, Lauren Lewis 6, and Alex Grimm and Madyson Baxter 3 each.
Boys wrestling
Marysville-Pilchuck’s wrestling team picked up four wins Tuesday at Squalicum, including a 48-27 win over the host team.
Many of the Tommies won with lightning-fast pins of less than a minute.
Tomahawks who won by pin against the host team were Austin Davis at 126 pounds in 3 minutes, 41 seconds; Isaiah Woods at 138 pounds in 1:55; and Cayden White at 195 pounds in 1:29. M-P also beat Ferndale 51-30. Five Tomahawks won by pin in less than 50 seconds.
Davis pinned in 2:40; Nick Cantu at 132 pounds pinned in 33 seconds; Woods won by pin in 24 seconds; at 145 pounds, Isaiah Galindo won by pin in 39 seconds; White won by pin in 28 seconds; at 195 pounds, Kamiakin Craig won by pin in 1:10; at 220 pounds, Ikaika Naweli won by pin in 49 seconds; and at 285 pounds Jeff Roullier pinned in 36 seconds. Also, at 120 pounds, Tanner Lauzon won 6-3. The Tommies demolished Bellingham 67-6.
Lauzon won by pin in 2:45; Davis pinned in 1:01; Cantu pinned in 58 seconds; at 138 pounds Corey Fregoso won by major decision 14-5; Galindo’s pin took just 10 seconds; at 152 pounds, Ammar Humoud won in overtime by a 12-10 decision; at 160 Ahmad Humoud pinned in 1:35; White pinned in 33 seconds; Roullier won by pin in 1:09; and at 113 Mikey Bejar pinned in 2:44.
The Tomahawks also whipped Sehome 57-11.
Davis pinned in 1:29; Cantu won a 6-0 decision; Ammar Humoud pinned in 2:40; Ahmad Humoud pinned in 29 seconds; Craig pinned in 19 seconds; and Lauzon pinned in 1:07.
Boys swimming
M-P fell to Cascade 126-55 and MG lost to that same team 129.5-48.5 in a meet Tuesday.
Andrew Christensen of MG won the 500-yard freestyle in 6 minutes,.54 seconds, nine seconds faster than his seed time. Seth Little of M-P was right behind him in that long race, finishing in 6:01.86.
Little won the 100 backstroke in 1:11.41, while Hunter Brown of MG was second.
Jesse Nahinu won the 100 backstroke in 1:16.53, and Luke Pusateri of M-P was third.
Ian Meetsma of M-P won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:19.9. Christensen was second.
Meetsma also was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.7. Kameron Wilkes of MG was third.
In diving, Andrew Kallio of M-P was second with 201 points. Tomahawk Daniel Kirkwood was third with 187.
Leif Anderson of M-P was second in the 100 free, with a time of 58.34 seconds, beating his seed time by 1 1/2 seconds in that short race.
In the 200 medley relay, MG was second with the team of Brown, Nahinu, Wilkes and Xander Johnson. M-P’s team of Little, Meetsma, Anderson and Pusateri was third.
M-P was second in the 400 free relay with Jayden Boyle, Anderson, Little and Meetsma. MG was third with Wilkes, Johnson, Brown and Christensen.
MG was third in the 200 free relay with Clayton Wilen, Wilkes, Nahinu and Christensen.
