MARYSVILLE — With at least a couple of varsity wrestlers sitting out the M-P Premier for various reasons, the Tomahawk team still pulled off a 10th-place finish at their annual wrestling invite.

Five wrestlers placed in all, though none reached their bracket championship this year.

A tough semifinal match-up cost M-P senior Tannon Hillis a return trip to the championship bracket at 215 pounds. Drawing Snohomish’s Derek Britton, the Panther scored a two-point takedown late in the third round that Hillis was unable to counter. The Tomahawk fell 3-1 in the match, entering the consolation bracket where he ended up placing third with a pin of Stanwood’s Kasey Pedroza.

Four more Tomahawks lost their consolation matches, each placing fifth.

At 119 pounds, Brandon Blevins showed tenacity, bouncing back from a 4-2 loss in his opener to Stanwood’s Jarred Studley to reel off wins against Inglemoor’s Brian Trabun, teammate Ruben Escalante and Eastlake’s Al Charat, only to face Studley again in his consolation match as he competed for third place. Once again, Studley pulled off a two-point win, this time 7-5 and Blevins settled for fifth place.

Two points were the difference for M-P’s Brian Donaldson in the consolation match for 135 pounds too. After defeating opponents from Burlington-Edison and Omak, Donaldson was pinned by bracket champion Stefan St. Marie of Snohomish, setting up a match for third place with Stephen Takashima of Lynnwood, where he fell, 12-10.

At 125 pounds, Josh Zaborowski placed fifth, as did teammate Jake Carlton at 171 pounds.
