MARYSVILLE — The Tomahawk softball team continued its early season success, defeating Lake Stevens in an offensive eruption for a 6-2 win in their second league game of the season.

While the girls allowed a few errors, they bounced back from a 2-0 deficit in the second inning, they cut off the Viking offense and left three Lake Stevens runners stranded with a 1-2-3 double play, stopping the lead runner at home and getting the third out at first base.

In the bottom of the third, the Tomahawks came up to bat on a mission to get on base and scored all six runs in an effort of the entire batting order.

Leading off at the top of the order with Jessica Tanigawa, the Tomahawks loaded the bases, narrowing the Lake Stevens lead as Tanigawa was walked in. A fielder’s choice gave M-P an out, but with bases still loaded, sophomore outfielder Morgan Martinis slammed a three-run double, giving the girls the lead for good. Lake Stevens gave up a walk to Jen Rosie, setting up a timely hit with two outs by sophomore Sacha Clow to score Martinis and Rosie for the fifth and sixth runs.

Hitting has been a strength of the Tomahawk lineup in the early season, said coach K.T. Allyn. The girls had a total of 38 hits in games against Kamiak, Mount Vernon and Monroe, with six more against Lake Stevens.

“For the most part, I think the team hit the ground running,” Allyn said.
