MARYSVILLE — Although the Highland Christian boys played one of their most complete games to date, they gave up 27 points in the fourth quarter, falling 68-56 to Tulalip Heritage.

The Hawks proved their Feb. 3 win was no anomaly, cementing their league championship season with a win over Lummi three nights later.

Tulalip took an early lead, going up 21-10 late in the first quarter, but Highland Christian got contributions from multiple players, including the trio of Jeff Miles, Jeff Kelly and Calvin Wold in the second quarter, who helped close the Tulalip lead. With back-to-back buckets from under the basket, Miles negated Shawn Comenote’s trey and closed Tulalip’s lead to the shortest it had been since the game began.

Forty-five seconds into the second half, Kelly tied it up.

But Tulalip senior Lesjar McKinney, who had a game-high 30 points, helped keep the Hawks close even as the Knights took a third-quarter lead. Then, with a barrage of three-pointers in the fourth quarter, Tulalip reasserted itself.

Comenote hit one early to retie the game 44-44 while McKinney and teammate Keith Davis each had two treys to retake the lead. McKinney shot a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and 16-for-20 overall as the Hawks pulled away.

“We came out looking pretty good in the first quarter, however we started to go away from our basic offense and as a result gave up the early lead,” Heritage coach Marlin Fryberg said. “The fourth quarter was quite exciting and my message to our boys was, ‘Relax, work hard and hit your foul shots.’”
