LAKEWOOD — Cougars coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth isn’t worried about his girls’ 2-0 loss to King’s on Oct. 9.

“It’s nothing to be concerned about, really,” he said.

Ironically, he is more pleased with his team’s play in its loss than its 1-0 win over the Knights three weeks ago.

“We actually played better tonight,” he said of his team, which outshot King’s 15-9. “Just one breakdown defensively cost us.”

That breakdown came in the 52nd minute when an initial shot ricocheted from a Lakewood defender leaving a foot race between Olivia Baker and Cougars keeper Miranda Head. Baker beat Head by a step and connected.

Baker’s score was the first goal Head and the Cougars’ defense has allowed since Sept. 22. They were riding a five-match shutout streak.

“I’m really proud of the way we’ve played all season,” Wohlgemuth said of his team, which is now 7-2 and in a second-place tie with King’s.

The second goal came in stoppage time when Wohlgemuth pushed everybody up to try and tie the score in the final minutes. A clear out found its way through the pushed up defense, which lead to a one-on-one and Hillary Zevenbergen putting the match out of reach.

The Cougars were not without their chances to score. A couple of breakaways were just out of reach of attackers and perhaps the best chance occurred when Abbey Burke had a breakaway with just minutes remaining, but was unable to finish.

The Cougars started the week with a 1-0 win over South Whidbey. Head picked up her sixth shutout this season and Maddie Chamberlain scored with a powerful shot from the right side of the box across the mouth into the left side of the net.

With a handful of games remaining, Lakewood has a chance to win the conference, although it will be a difficult task to defeat 9-0 Archbishop Murphy.

“We still can win, but our goal at the start of the season was to be a one or two seed at districts,” Wohlgemuth said. “I think we can do that, and maybe our most important game will be against Granite Falls on (Oct. 13).”
