MARYSVILLE Head coach Julie Martin is looking forward to an exciting 2006-07 season at the helm of the Lady Tomahawks basketball team.
After being the varsity assistant her first year at M-PHS, Martin is entering her fourth-year as the head coach
Assisting her will be John Boyle, in charge of junior varsity; Sarah Smith for the sophomore squad, and Jim Kavaney will oversee the freshmen team.
Five upperclassmen return from the 2005-06 team: senior co-captains Laura Degerness and Nancy Couls join juniors Anna West, Nicole Peterson and Jessica Masters.
Captains Degerness and Couls are undecided about the teams goals, but both agree that their potential is unlimited.
As a team we should definitely go to districts, Couls said after a recent practice.
Anything is possible. It depends on if everyone wants it and how much they are willing to work for it, co-captain Degerness added.
Coach Martin said one of the main team goals is to concentrate on work ethic and team chemistry.
By working together we do little goals to make it to a big goal, she said. We just take it day by day.
In addition to the corps of five returning players, the Lady Tomahawks will have a total of seven talented teens on the varsity roster.
Britt Harris, a sophomore, has some height for us according to Martin; Iceshay Wright, a sophomore transfer from Jackson High School; Shaelei Lucas, a junior, is a year-round player that has really improved her all-around game; Jessica Nielsen, a sophomore, is a really hard worker.
Kylie Fordon, junior; Tiarra Moses, junior and Krisel Juco, a sophomore, round out the varsity roster.
The Lady Tomahawks open their non-league schedule Wednesday, Nov. 29 at home against Shorecrest.
JV tips off at 5:40 p.m. and varsity follows at 7:30 p.m.
