MARYSVILLE — The Lake Stevens Vikings pounded out eight runs in the first inning and never looked back as they went on to claim a 12-4 victory over the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks on April 22.

“It was kind of a perfect storm with the starting pitcher walking a few guys, Lake Stevens having some hot bats and some untimely errors,” said head coach Kurt Koshelnik.

“We had to put that first inning behind us and try to scratch and claw our way back into the game,” said Koshelnik. “They didn’t quit and I’m happy with our play in the last six innings of the game.”

M-P batted in one run in the second, one in the third and two in the sixth but that was not enough to overcome the Vikings who scored another run in the second inning and three more in the seventh.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, M-P had handed Lake Stevens it’s first league loss of the season but the Vikings came back to clinch the three-game series against M-P with wins on Wednesday and Friday.

Despite the loss, there were some positives in the game.

“John Nass, as well as our lead-off hitter Joe Morgan have both been hitting pretty well,” said Koshelnik. “And Tyler Klep at third base has been a rock-solid defensive leader.”

The Tommies are headed in to a three-game series against Arlington (April 26, 27 and 29) that could have post season implications.

“It’s going to be a tough series,” Koshelnik said. “Both of us are hanging on to the 3-4 spots for the playoffs. If one of the teams loses all three games, it could make it real difficult for them to make the post-season play.”
