ARLINGTON — This season in girls soccer, Lake Stevens has been the team to beat. So it was a spirited Arlington team that took the field against the Vikings, hoping for an upset victory on Senior Night.

Things got off to a good start and both teams traded jabs. In the 15th minute, junior Kristina Longosky drew Lake Stevens keeper Kaitlin McKenzie out for a keeper. Longosky beat her to the ball and dropped it in front of the net setting up an attempt by senior Erin Taylor that just missed.

Less than a minute later, Arlington had a chance to try a similar play on the Lake Stevens goal. This time, senior forward Katy Giebel hit the target and gave Arlington a 1-0 advantage.

“It was awesome that Katy scored,” Arlington coach Nathan Davis said after the game. “That was her first goal ever.”

No more goals were exchanged before halftime. But while the energy remained high in the second half, the tide turned toward Lake Stevens.

Lake Stevens junior Kinslee Isaman curved a kick that crested just beyond the reach of Arlington keeper Chelsea Boulton and into the corner of the net for the tying goal eight minutes into the second half.

Senior forward Taryn Wright broke the tie with less than five minutes in the game, giving the Vikings the go-ahead point off of a corner kick.

Davis credited junior goaltender Chelsea Boulton for keeping Arlington so competitive in the game, adding that the Viking goal to tie it up “was just a great goal.”

“Chelsea played an amazing game,” he added. “She had 10 or 15 really great saves.”

In addition to the defensive performance, Arlington played a physical game in the midfield and passed the ball well, anticipating teammates’ moves.

The performance against Lake Stevens spurred Davis to add, “I think we really can play with anybody.”
