SULTAN — Lakewood tried to quickly finish five innings, but weren’t able to fight both Sultan and Mother Nature April 6.

Amid constant rainfall for four innings, the Cougars’ bid to make up an April 2 game against the Turks was suspended and scheduled to be finished April 10.

Holding a 2-0 lead through three, Lakewood was trying to get to the fifth inning as fast as it could before the game was called, but Sultan hit a two-run double to tie the score with two outs. And with that, the umpires immediately sent the players off the field.

“We were hoping to make it through five with that lead, but we gave them an opportunity to extend the inning with an error and they made the most of it,” said Lakewood coach Larry Delaney.

The game is scheduled to resume at April 10 when everybody will retake their positions with a Sultan runner on second base.

“That will be a different experience for the guys and for me,” Delaney said. “I’ve been doing this a few years now and I’ve never had a suspended game. It’s almost like a drill that we run in practice.”

Lakewood took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Alex Keane’s fielder’s choice brought in Lucas Harkins.

With slippery conditions on both ends, the Cougars were able to take advantage of multiple Sultan pitchers who struggled with their control. Meanwhile, Lakewood pitcher Tony Miller seemed unaffected by the weather, executing pitches in tight situations and racking up four strike outs.

Lakewood added on to it’s lead in the third inning, when catcher Michael Leach’s sacrifice fly brought Harkins in a second time. Harkins reached first on an error, took advantage of a passed ball to get to second and was sacrificed over to third.

It seems as if this three-game series isn’t supposed to happen, as Sultan (2-6) took the first two games, which were played at Lakewood (5-4) on a double-header March 31 due to rain.

The Cougars had a chance to get another insurance run in the fourth with runners on second and third with one out, but couldn’t capitalize.
