MARYSVILLE — “Anytime you lose half your varsity team, regardless of the reason, you’re not going to be playing to your full potential,” said first-year coach Erik Carlson.

Unfortunately, that was the case April 30 when the Lakewood boys golf team lost to their league rival, the Cedarcrest Red Wolves, 461-436.

Nearly every member of the Lakewood team said that they felt they could’ve done better and knew they have done better in the past. Still Carlson believes his guys are peaking at the right time.

“I think if our guys shoot the way they can in districts, we can have a couple of guys moving on to state and that’s what it’s all about,” said Carlson. “The league is set up where the league matches don’t count a whole lot but when you play a couple good rounds in the district tournament you get rewarded for it.”

Cedarcrest’s Ryan McKinlay was the medalist of the match with a score of 79 through 18 holes on the par 72 Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville. From the Cougars, junior Kris Parrish led, shooting an 83.

“I felt pretty good. I know I could’ve done better, but I’ll take my score of 83,” Parrish said.

Others from Lakewood were Bryan Gregory with 93, Bryce Rosenbach with 90, Jakob Strand with 96 and Jared Graffenauer with 99.

Overall, Parrish believes the team is headed down the right path.

“Our team definitely has a lot of potential, especially the freshmen that came up,” he said. “I have a feeling we’re going to do very well next season.”
