After four meetings in as many years as football coach Dan Teeter has been at Lakewood High School, Teeter finally got the best of his alma mater and the Cougars defeated Lynden Christian 38-21 on Sept. 11.

“One thing that I have always admired is the intensity that Lynden Christian plays with and the fact that they absolutely never quit,” Teeter said. “They are a team that is used to winning and they always seem to think they’ll find a way to pull it out.”

That was true even as Lakewood picked up the victory. After leading 32-7 at halftime, the Lyncs made adjustments during the break and came out to score two more touchdowns in the second half. Lakewood scored on their opening drive, converting a third and short play into a long gain that set up Cameron Fry’s eight-yard touchdown on the next play. The Lyncs came back and tied the game, but freshman Brandon Stott found the end zone on a 44-yard run that helped give Lakewood a lead they would not give up in the remaining three quarters of play.

Lakewood scored three more touchdowns in the second quarter to blow the game wide open.

Junior quarterback Justin Lane culminated a drive into Lynden Christian territory on a one-yard run. The Cougars recovered the ensuing kickoff when the Lyncs’ return man inadvertently touched the ball, setting up a 30-yard scoring reception by Sam Johnston on third down. Before halftime, sophomore running back Christian Melton found the end zone too, on a 48-yard carry.

“The second half was a different story, as Lynden Christian had the ball for all but four plays in the third quarter,” Teeter said.

The Lyncs scored in the third and fourth quarters, putting a scare into the Lakewood sideline.

After trading three and outs, Lakewood held Lynden Christian on a key fourth down and Isaiah Brown scored on the drive from five yards out, sealing the win.

“The biggest thing that I hope the 2-0 start brings to our team is the confidence to know how good we can be. When we play the way we are capable of, we can play with any team,” Teeter said. “If there is something that I would like our guys to take away from Lynden Christian as an opponent, it would be the way that they compete for all 48 minutes, no matter what the score is.”

The boys will face a fight in week three as they host South Whidbey on Sept. 18, a team that is still looking for its first win and faces a handful from Cedarcrest in week four. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
