Dominance in the field and distance events gave the Lakewood boys and girls track teams victory when Cedarcrest hosted the Cougars and Archbishop Murphy for a league tri-meet April 17.
The Lakewood boys went 1-2 in all three distance events while senior thrower Tawnya Hulslander won two events and took second in a third.
Hulslander took first in the discus, throwing 113-07, and the javelin at 95-9, besting teammate Rachael Hartman in the latter event. Hartman had her turn in the spotlight though, edging Hulslander in the shot put with a best throw of 33-1 1/2, more than two feet beyond her fellow Cougar.
Six different guys contributed to Lakewood’s sweep of the distance events. Sophomore Taylor Guske outpaced teammate James Mattson to win the 800 in 2:06.74, while Austin Young beat Nick Howe in 4:48.02. Lakewood took the top three spots in the two mile, as Thomas Scheffer won in 11:22.10. He was followed by Byron Gouette and Mitchell Gogert.
The field events were kind to Lakewood. Freshman Charnie Dondrea won the girls high jump with a best mark of 4-8, tying with teammate Amanda Gregory. Senior pole vaulter Jeneca Hoidal impressed as well with a 9-0 leap, besting the rest by two feet.
On the boys side, five different Cougars won a field event as well. Though the field of competition was small, Nathan Hesselman had a state-caliber high jump when he cleared 6-2. Payden Butler and Cameron Hess went 1-2 in the javelin with marks of 153-6 and 145-9, and Spencer Hulslander cleared 13-3 in the pole vault to win that event. Freshman long jumper Andre Scott won his event with a leap of 18-9 1/4, beating out fellow Cougar C.J. Rutkoski’s 18-2 1/2. Ryan Culbertson won the discus by a solid 15-foot margin with a best throw of 136-8.
Other Lakewood wins included junior Devon Smith in the 200, Terrence Ordonez over Chad Skiles in the 400 and the boys 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
