SHORELINE — When you’re playing a soccer team with a high-octane offense like King’s — ranked No. 1 in the state in 1A after a week of competition — sometimes all you can hope to do is contain them.

Lakewood used a defense-oriented strategy to shut down King’s returning all-league forward Hillary Zevenbergen. While they were only able to take six shots on the Knights’ goal through 80 minutes and two overtimes, the Lakewood girls pulled off the 1-0 win Sept. 17 in a shootout, thanks in part to sophomore goalkeeper Miranda Head’s performance in the nets.

With the win, Lakewood improved to 4-0 overall.

“We worked on shutting down Zevenbergen and worked on exploiting the opportunities that arose,” said Lakewood coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth. “They dominated the run of the play and possession 70, 80 percent of the game. I think we have one of the best keepers in the league.”

In the shootout, Lakewood trailed early as freshman midfielder Abby Burke’s attempt, Lakewood’s first of the night, just grazed the crossbar of the goal. However, King’s suffered a near-miss in their second attempt, allowing sophomore Kiley Brown to even up the shootout on the girls’ second attempt.

The teams exchanged four perfect jabs, bringing up an extra penalty kick. The home team, King’s went first and Head came up with the block in the goal. Junior forward Alisha Stott converted her kick to give Lakewood a crucial league win.

“I apologized to their coach,” Wohlgemuth added. “I hate winning in PKs, I hate losing in PKs. But this is a top five win for us. They’re No. 1 in 1A and this is the first time we’ve done that (beat a ranked team).”

It wasn’t long before another formidable league opponent tested Lakewood’s record. The girls faced Granite Falls Sept. 22 after the Globe/Times went to press. They’ll play Archbishop Murphy — a team that has long had Lakewood’s number — Sept. 24 at home.
