There’s no place like home to run one’s best.

It was at home at Lakewood’s annual Hole in the Wall Invitational that junior Taylor Guske gave his best performance of the season and won the varsity boys 5k.

With a time of 16:18, Guske set his third personal record of the season, beating Peninsula junior Chris Borg by two seconds for first place. Guske’s performance helped lead the Lakewood boys to a third-place finish overall behind Issaquah and Peninsula.

Senior Nick Devier also finished in the boys top 10, taking 10th place in a time of 16:41. Byron Gouette (32nd), Trent Tresch (38th) and Chad Skiles (47th) also scored points for Lakewood, all finishing within a minute of Devier.

While the Lakewood girls had no top-10 runners, they placed even higher as a team than the boys.

Led by senior Lacey Nation’s time of 20:21, the girls took second place behind 3A Capital of Olympia. Nation, who placed 12th, was closely followed by sophomore Chelsea Stokes, who placed 15th. Freshman Rachel Cundy placed third for Lakewood and 31st overall in 20:49, followed by Tasha Bartol and Amber Burnell.

The Arlington boys also produced a top-10 finisher at the Hole in the Wall as senior Sean Gregory finished in sixth place with a time of 16:32. Teammates Jeff Huge, Lukas Chase, Aaron Newsome and Jimmy Dix also earned points for Arlington, finishing in 20th place.

The Arlington girls fared better, finishing in eighth place as a team. Sophomore Kristin Wreggelsworth paced the girls with a time of 20:30 and 17th-place finish, followed by sophomores Bryna Prause (37th) and Katie Anderson (55th). Junior Amye Ellsworth and freshman Kyle Kilmer rounded out the scoring five for Arlington.
