MARYSVILLE – Defending 2A state champs Lynden schooled 3A Marysville-Pilchuck Monday night in every facet of the game, winning 80-46.

M-P fans can only hope the team learned from the lesson.

On offense, the Lions unselfishly moved the ball passing from player to player until they got an open shot. They were especially adept at keeping the lane open so players cutting to the basket could get one-on-one shots after receiving entry passes. On defense, M-P rarely got an open look – no matter how far out they were. Often the M-P player with the ball was double-teamed. The Lions forced many turnovers. And they were relentless on the boards. M-P rarely crashed the offensive boards because they needed to get back to protect from the fastbreak, which was effective anyway.

In contrast, the Lions crashed the offensive boards to get second and third shots, if they needed them.

M-P never was really in the game, especially after being outscored 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 39-21 halftime lead.

The only real highlight for the Tomahawks was Cameron Stordahl. He led the team with 16 points. Most came when star player RaeQuan Battle was out of the game, and it was up to Stordahl to score. He showed some good one-on-one skills, and also passed to teammate Ethan Jackson for a few scores in the final period. Alec Jones-Smith also had a couple of nice assists that quarter.

Other scorers were: Battle with 11, Jackson 9, T.J. Severn 5, Jones-Smith 2, Aaron Kalab 2 and Brady Phelps 1. Luke Dobler did not play.
